Recommendations for AUSD Curriculum 2009

CARE Recommendation

CARE recommends continuing the work for a more comprehensive curriculum that addresses all the protected classes and fully supports the continued work by the AUSD staff in identifying these materials and forwarding its recommendation for approval to the Board of Education.

In addition, because there has been wider community agreement on developing a bully, bystander, victim curriculum, CARE also recommends the incorporation of the anti-bullying component recommended by both the teacher committee and the community advisory committee, “Second Step and Steps to Respect”.

Further, CARE strongly recommends that Lesson 9 and the Caring Schools Community Curriculum be maintained until such time that the comprehensive curriculum is identified and implemented.  It is also imperative that the curriculum be implemented in a timely manner so that the work can be expanded to the middle and high school levels.

Lastly, there is recognition of the current litigation and the issue of the parcel tax to support education. Though we do not feel the issue of a parcel tax is relevant to this conversation, CARE is fully supportive of a parcel tax to continue to enrich the education experience of everyone in the AUSD.
